29-Day Giving Challenge

By Eliza Bicknell of Lotus Petal Yoga

I remember hearing about the 29-day giving challenge and thinking it was something I needed to look into and wanted to do. Months went by and it was still in the back of my mind. I am not sure why it took me so long, but finally just 3 days ago I logged on to www.29gifts.org and signed up for the challenge.

The idea is simple and their mission is this - to revive the giving spirit in the world. To change lives—and change the world—one gift at a time. After you sign up, you commit to giving one gift - something material, your time, your kindness, a thoughful remark, a door held open for a stranger, a story, a thought, basically anything you can think of - every day for 29 days in a row. By giving, and being in a constant state of gratitude, we attract greater and greater abundance into our own lives, and it continues to spread. The simple acts of altruism can dramatically alter your outlook on the world.

The idea for the 29 day giving challenge and supportive website came from a young woman Cami Walker. Cami was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and plagued with negative thoughts about her condition. Then, a friend, an African medicine woman named Mbali Creazzo gave her an unlikely prescription: Give away 29 gifts in 29 days. Focus on what you have to offer to others she told Cami. Cami was so changed by her kind acts of giving that she designed the challenge, created the website and even wrote a book about it. You can read camis story and purchase her book through the website listed above.

So, I am currently on day 3 of my 29 day giving spree. I have decided that rather than plan out each day, deciding what to give and to whom and when, I would let the process unfold and see where it takes me. Yesterday it took me to donate around 35 books that we have had on our shelves but will never read again and today it has inspired me to give away 16 yoga DVDs from my website (featured above) I posted them up for offer on our local areas freecycle community board and have had lots of interest - those who are disabled, those who teach at risk teens, those who are elderly. I am feeling truly happy to give these individuals the gift of yoga.

I will continue to post throughout the next 29 days of so, hoping that in some small way my gifts are changing the world.

I think that you're right about letting the process "unfold". It's more genuine. It all boils down to simple acts of kindness when the chance comes -- and it always comes.

I'm glad I found this interesting Intel. Similarly, I gave something away each day during Lent. Surprisingly, I gained more than I gave in unexpected ways.
