Sleep Study x 2
By Eliza Bicknell of Lotus Petal Yoga
A sleep study allows doctors to determine how well and how much you sleep and to diagnose possible sleep related disorders. Most people are unaware about their movements and breathing patterns during the night yet sleep related issues can cause a variety of health related problems such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack and many others. Sleep disorders are also linked to an increased risk of injury due to falls and car accidents. My entire life I have had issues with sleep, either falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the night. Things that prevent me from sleeping: • Noise • Light. I have been known to tape aluminum foil on the windows of my hotel rooms to keep light out! This trick works well by the way. • If I think anyone will enter the room at all during the evening I cannot fall asleep, likewise if other people are already in the room I have difficulty sleeping. • If I have something important to do the next day I will worry about it all night • If I have to get up early the next day or if it is past 11pm I start to stress about not having enough hours to sleep and then keep myself awake in this manner. • I sleep best in a king bed alone with 4 pillows, 3 of which go under my legs as I sleep exclusively on my back • Caffeine and alcohol keep me awake. Likewise exercise within 2 hours of sleep time keeps me awake. • I cannot sleep on a plane, in a car on a boat or in a train or on the ground while camping. • Anyone who snores drives me literally over the edge. As you can imagine, I am not the easiest person to travel with or sleep next to; I am also tired all the time, even if I feel as though I have had a good night sleep, I am tired, tired tired. So I decided to have a sleep study. Perhaps, I thought, there is something going on with all of this, maybe I can learn about my sleep patterns and see if there is something I can do from that angle. I checked in to my sleep room equip with my pajamas, toothbrush and pillow around 10 pm. On my way in I passed the central monitoring area, where the technicians monitor 1 or 2 other sleeping patients. They use computers, video, and print-outs of your recorded activity and you always have a direct line of communication to them throughout the night. After I had my pajamas on, the process of hooking up the electrodes began. It took around 35 – 40 minutes to get everything hooked up properly. Last but not least, the technician told me - ‘if you show signs of sleep apnea during the night, I will come in and hook this CPAP machine up to you that will help you breathe.’ He proceeded to place the machine on me so I could feel what it was like. Immediately I could not breathe and felt constricted. I became horrified of this machine and that someone would come into the room to put it on me in the night. You probably guessed what happened next. I lay down to sleep but…remained wide awake all night long. I was so stressed and concerned about them coming in to put that machine on me that I simply couldn’t sleep. The next morning it took hours to get the glue from the electrodes off of my body, especially out of my hair. When I went in to have the results of the study interpreted, the doctor said, - ‘we can’t tell anything from this study, you never fell asleep.’ Sigh, big waste of time and money. In spite of that, I decided to give it another try a few years later. My thoughts were that this time I would sleep and learn something about my sleep patterns. The second time in I immediately told the technician that I did not want the sleep apnea machine hooked up to me no matter what and he agreed. I dozed off and on the entire night but again never went into deep sleep, in such an environment, I just couldn’t. Once again the results showed nothing of any use. I no longer worry about sleep issues or sleep as much as I used to. I accept that I am not great at sleeping (I am envious of those who are, consider yourselves blessed.) If I get a horrible night sleep I just deal and hope that the next night is better, it usually is.

Wow Eliza... I have sleep issues at times too. But the reasons vary. I sure do hope everything goes and stays well with you...
For what it's worth: When I don't sleep well, I tell myself I've had all the sleep I need and if I needed more, I'd sleep more. Okay, not worth much, but it works for me. Good luck and may all your sleep be deep and relaxing.
Eliza, I am so glad that you included your experience with the sleep study here. I have trouble getting to sleep sometimes too. With all the tips and tricks I have tried, I have had little success. I thought of having a sleep study but know that I too, would never sleep a wink. It's good to know ahead of time what to expect. It would be a waste of my time and stressful also. Thanks again. Laraine
