Your Relationship With Food
By Eliza Bicknell of Lotus Petal Yoga
Have you ever stopped to consider what your relationship is with the food you eat? For what reasons do you eat? Simply for fuel? Out of boredom, anger or depression? Do you eat as fast as you can, standing over the sink or while strapping a child into a car seat? Do you just grab a bar? Do you consider where how the items you eat were selected, prepared and placed in front of you? Are you afraid of food? Are you turning away from an inspired relationship with food because it might mean that you can no longer use it as a weapon against yourself? Instead of any of these things, I offer that the act of eating and the very food itself can be a form of art. It is an art that can be indulged multiple times a day. It is how you eat that matters, as well as what you eat. You don’t need to love cooking and prepare massive elaborate meals at every occasion in order to eat well and change your relationship with food. We do not learn to see the beauty in the food we eat, or perhaps we see it but never really feel it. Here is what I propose: consider how you want to feel. Next make a list of the foods you love that make you feel the way you wish to feel. Perhaps you will think if bright colors or seasonings that invigorate or inspire, scents that lift you. From your list make a meal plan. Get excited about grocery shopping; make it a fulfilling experience rather than just a chore. Prepare your food for the week in advance so it’s easy to grab yet inspirational once you grab it. No longer allow food to happen to you, be selective and conscious of all that you choose to eat. Eat without your computer on your phone in one hand or a child on your lap. Set yourself up as they do in France with a place mat and nice flatware for every single meal, even if you are eating at your desk at work. Indulge in a goblet for your beverage of choice! For as long as it takes, observe the food, smell, touch, taste. Feel the nourishment in your system. Ask yourself how you feel. Is this the feeling you want? If not, perhaps question why you have chosen to eat that particular food. Perhaps you will begin to start choosing healthier foods, foods that truly nourish and nurture the body and the soul. Your relationship with food can be an artful expression if you let it.

I must confess, Eliza, that I do not consciously do that with food. But on reflection, I may indeed be doing it unconsciously. Interesting...
I recall that as a child, dinner was a time to enjoy your day with your family. You could call this a relationship with your food. I think that this is missing in a lot of families today. Thank you for sharing,Eliza and bringing back the memories. Best wishes. Frederick
This is a very good intel, especially for me because I'm single and most of the time I'm that guy who who rushes something on the stove, or microwave So I can sit at the computer and eat.
Eliza, that photo of yours makes my mouth water. I enjoyed this most masterly done intel. Thank you.
